“The power of music to integrate and cure. . . is quite fundamental. It is the profoundest nonchemical medication.”
Areas of Practice
Attachment Music Therapy (AMT)
AMT is the use of music, specifically the sound, voice, of a caregiver who is “in-relationship” with the child; that relationship is in need of support. Music is used as a relationship builder in some cases and/or to support an already strong attachment that has been challenged by the chronic condition of an infant or child. The music therapy is conducted with family groups and parent/infant dyads.
Palliative Music Therapy (PMT)
PMT generally aims at the improvement or maintenance of the client’s quality of life, including the management of pain and stress, the regulation of negative emotions (e.g. anxiety, anger, and depression), as well as the facilitation of communication and spiritual experiences.
Developmental Music Therapy (DMT)
DMT incorporates music that assists with maintaining or attaining the appropriate development. The inter-disciplinary use of songs and music can address the areas of cognition, social/emotional, physical & educational development for children. If a client is at a specific mental age – such as a 13-year-old functioning at a 2-year mental age due to a chronic condition, music is used that matches the mental age of the child.
Music Therapy for Pain Management (MTPM)
MTPM is based on a cognitive behavioral model of therapy, which posits that new thoughts, feelings and body states may be conditioned to replace dysfunctional patterns. Specifically, a relaxed body and pleasant visual images may replace tension and worry when they are conditioned as a response to familiar, calming music. The conditioning process takes place when listening to this music is paired with deep relaxation through repeated practice.
Neurological Music Therapy (NMT)
NMT is defined as the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic disease/injury of the human nervous system. NMT is based on a neuroscience model of music perception and production and the influence of music on functional changes in nonmusical brain and behavior functions.
Music Therapy Programming (MTP)
A variety of individuals have targeted needs that can best be addressed within a specific group such as early intervention, support, sensory, and or social. MTP is provided for these groups and can be found under the website heading "Programs and Services." See how a program may assist your loved one.
